Autism Centre Gets $1-Million Boost
A $1-million donation by an Edmonton car dealership has launched into high gear plans for a local treatment centre for children with autism. Klaus Maier, president of Bavaria BMW, announced yesterday he is donating land on which to build the new treatment centre, along with funds for the construction of a $4.5-million treatment facility. Maier noted that such a treatment centre exists in Calgary, but that many families in Edmonton currently have to wait at least a year for developmental treatment for their children. Autism
Autism is a brain development disorder that impairs social interaction and communication and causes restricted and repetitive behavior, all starting before a child is three years old. This set of signs distinguishes autism from milder autism spectrum disorders (ASD) such as Asperger syndrome.
